Weekend Adventures

We had one of my roomate's neices over Saturday, and we decided to all go out and pick walnuts.  So, we drive along aimlessly for a while, along a country road... until we finally spotted walnuts on the ground!  We grabbed shopping bags, and started to pick.  The walnut trees were growing between a field and the road, so we started out on the roadside first... then I decided to look for the ones under the trees.  I get halfway through the brush (tree limbs, briars, etc) when all of the sudden I realize I'm caught!

My hair was up in a ponytail, and somehow a branch had gotten UNDER the hair on the top of my head, and when I moved it jerked that hair up...  so now I have a huge welt on my head where it pulled so hard!!! When I went to brush my hair yesterday, it brought tears to my eyes.

However, we did get a HUGE amount of walnuts... (we refer to this area now as "Walnut Eutopia") we filled a trash bag about halfway full, and three or four Walmart-sized plastic sacks.  Now we have to find somewhere to put them, and let the outsides dry for a while.  Once the outsides dry, we peel them off, then we take the walnut, hit it with a hammer, and then we pick out the nut itself.  I know, it sounds a bit confusing... when it comes time for us to do them, I'll take pics okay?

So, while others are recovering from wild parties and hangovers this weekend, I'm recovering from a Walnut gathering mission.  I have a welt on my head, scratches all up and down my arms and legs, and for some odd reason the muscles in my butt hurt.

But it was fun!!!  Which is good... because there are still a WHOLE lot of walnuts laying on the ground there!!! We'll probably go back again in a couple of weeks! lol

Wow, that was a lot of walnuts. You can just send them to me if you dont have any place to put them. *fnise*
But why do you use a hammer to cruch them? Dont you have a nutcrucher?
You did not tell me abut your head on msn. Is it so much better? Hope so.

My folks have 2 walnut trees. Dad does it the easy way. He picks them up off the ground. Although, the squirrels take a lot of them. We're not big on squirrels here in town. They chew through everything!

Doesn't it just figure?? We put our long hair in a ponytail to get it out of our way, and it causes us more pain than if we'd left it down to tangle in the branches!

Jami, we have a recipe book from Diamond Walnut company with ALL KINDS of recipes in it! Who knows what we'll make!

Leti, you have a valid point. Next time I go, I'll make sure to give the tree a good spanking. (Not only will that make me feel better and be good discipline for the tree, it might knock down some of the nuts that are still in the tree! hahahaha)

Jen, me too! Especially cashews. Good thing those don't grow around here. I'd be gathering them every day just to support my habit! hahaha

Mei, me too!!!!!!!

Eliza, interesting!!!

hi jana. mmm... walnuts...

"intuitive consultant" is how i say "psychic." i don't like the connotations of that word, and i'm not a big fan of the associated scene. my version is less charged, and gets closer to what i do.

Way to fight nature! With your ponytail and your rear! ;-) Going walnut picking sounds fun. Do you put the walnuts in cookies?
